Is Living In Bigger Houses More Eco Friendly Than Living In Smaller Ones?

Posted by Catherine - Under: Community, Eco Basics, Eco Friendly Family, Eco Friendly Garden, Eco Friendly House, Eco Friendly Kitchen, Environment, Food, General, Home Improvements, How Did You Do?, Pets, Planning, Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, The Future

We bulk buy products to be eco friendly - so does a bigger house give the same benefits?

We’ll not if you are just a single person or a couple - but what if you involved the whole family or some friends?  And I don’t mean join some commune or hippy campsite - although they are both options for some people.

What I am talking about is a great idea for saving energy, combining skills and resources as well as improving everything else ‘in bulk’.  So how about it?

The Theory:
I would love to live in a large home surrounded by land - but I know this would be a bit selfish in the overall scheme of things - so how about a compromise?

How about planning to live in a house with other people, whether they be my mum or sibling - or even friends - And it doesn’t need to be as bad as it sounds: you would plan to buy a property that still allowed you your privacy, for example a 3 story town house, divided into 2 sections or a detached property with a ‘granny annexe’ as part of it.

This way, you can pool resources too, like a joint investment in a garden allotment, solar panels, wildlife garden etc, as not only will you have more combined finances with this arrangement - you will also have a larger amount of space to work with.

2 couples living in townhouses may only have a small courtyard garden and a thin sliver of the terraced roof - but combine those 2 mortgages or using a larger deposit could mean you are able to buy detached, with more garden, off road parking, fruit trees, a larger roof and less overheads: only 1 TV license, one Council Tax, lower energy costs (the first so-many units are higher priced), lower food costs (buying in bulk), the list goes on……

It has all the same advantages as buying a 2 litre bottle of shampoo rather than 4×500ml bottles - but on a much larger scale!

Other Benefits:
For starters, all the maintenance costs will be shared between you all, insurance bills and repairs will all be halved - so more money to spend on green investments.

The security of your home will be increased as when you are away, the other people will probably still be around - and the animals and plants can carry on growing while you are busy.

Magazine subscriptions can be shared, and days out can be treated as ‘family’ tickets as there will always be enough people to make up the numbers! Less cars even, depending on your situation - and more shared journeys - or less journeys even; well if you are going to the store - then your flatmates don’t need to!

Food should never go out of date if there are twice as many people around to eat it - and if you ook together then imagine the energy savings!  And there will always be enough dirty dishes to fill the machine - and clothes for a full wash!

And can you imagine how great it would be for the kids to grow up in a friendly environment where they can learn skills from all the people around them, and live in an house with a bit of character and a large garden with chickens in it!

Sounds perfect - I just need to find some similar-minded friends…………

Does An Eco Magazine Have To Be So Green You Can’t Touch It?

Posted by Catherine - Under: Eco Friendly Business, Eco Friendly Family, Environment, How Did You Do?, Planning, Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, Shopping, The Future

Is the old-fashioned paper magazine got to go if you are trying to create an eco friendly house?

Well, This is one that even I struggle with, as I love to hold things in my hand when I read them - especially if it about something that I am passionate about.

But should I feel guilty about all that paper, all that ink and all that postage?  Should I be scrolling down on my computer instead?

So, to help you decide, I am giving you the green versions of all the problems along the way - and why paper doesn’t have to be physically recycled to be eco friendly!

The Paper:
No longer does a magazine have to be made with illegally or unsustainably ‘farmed’ virgin pulp from the rainforests of the Amazon or Borneo.  It can be made from either recycled paper, or from FSC certified wood.

The first option means that you are actively making all your other recycling worth while as you are creating a market for used goods - and the more people that buy recycled goods, the more recycling we will see as a whole.

The FSC certified paper will mean that the paper you are reading has not been sourced from anywhere that is damaging the environment or the habitat that it came from.  And as new trees are planted all the time to keep the woodlands balanced, more carbon is absorbed from the atmosphere than if the existing ‘older’ forest remained intact.

The Ink:
There are many different inks available today that are less polluting than existing versions, and those that are made with vegetable oils are becoming much more common.  This trend means that the components of the ink are now naturally degradable rather than releasing man-made chemicals into the environment.

There are also techniques that mean that less ink is used per letter typed, therefore reducing the volume or ink used per magazine.

The Postage:
Many magazines are now packaged in biodegradable clear packaging - which will clearly state how to dispose of it - but there are many that are not - so you may need to write to them and ask why?

Also, many magazines (even those in biodegradable wrapping) and those who write about global issues, still fill their magazines with advertising material, which ultimately weighs down the overall package.

Not only are these ‘leaflets’ making the postal service use more fuel to transport them (imagine 10,000 people all getting sent the same 3 leaflets extra - it soon adds up for more fuel), but they will no doubt get put straight into the recycling bin, as most people just want to read the magazine, not read about greener grass or an over 50’s health plan!

The Opposition:
So, should we all read our magazines online instead?  With no paper, ink, postage or deforestation to worry about it should be an easy decision, right?

One clear benefit will be financial - but not for you and your friends. If you can’t pass on your old magazines to your friends and family anymore, then they will all have to buy their own copy - which will mean that ‘real’ eco magazines will get 1000’s more £’s or $’s to put towards their green causes!

But on the not-so-positive side - well, lets just think about this first:  How green is the computer, laptop, e-reader or smart phone you are reading your online magazine on?

Now I know that there are many computers involved in the making of the paper magazine these days, but that’s where it stops.  So unless you have an eco friendly branded electronic device - how many rare minerals and toxic compounds have been used to create your ‘online magazine’?

And, are you charging your laptop or ‘phone with renewable green energy - or are you still using the uber polluting coal-fired electricity to keep your devices going?

And one final point is what will I read in my doctors waiting room if all magazines are online only?  Will the surgery need to provide e-readers for us all?  Or will we have to bring our own?

No Need For Slippers In My Bathroom! I Have Under Floor Heating!

Posted by Catherine - Under: Eco Friendly Business, Eco Friendly House, Eco Friendly Kitchen, Environment, General, Reduce, Winter

A friend recently fell in love with my bathroom after a nights sleep-over!

I have underfloor heating in there, and she just loved stepping out of the shower and onto a lovely warm floor!  The heating was installed in the bathroom and the kitchen after we moved in, and I love it!

We originally had it installed when we moved into an old Victorian terraced house - with little space for a modern kitchen - and no discernible bathroom!  The bath was sitting in a lean-to at the back of the property, with pipes running down the wall for taps and a creaky and gappy wooden door out to the garden!

We had to re-design the back of the house to fit a real bathroom and didn’t want to waste an inch of what space we had with radiators - so did a bit of research on our options for heating the 2 rooms.

I was very pleased with the result, and have not regretted it at all.

So, How Did We Do It?
Firstly, we consulted a plumber as we were needing to fit a new condensing boiler at the same time.  He said that he had been fitting more an more underfloor heating systems in the past few years - and he even had it in his house too!

It’s really simple to do as well if you are laying a new floor - as we were - and you just need to lay enough flexible cable under the surface to create an even spread and then lay the floor as usual.  We had tiles in the bathroom and bamboo in the kitchen - not a problem he said.

It also turns out that there are many other benefits to underfloor heating other than not needing to cover your walls in radiators when you really need another cupboard there!

The Main Benefits:
Where shall I start - there are so many?

Well, for starters it is more energy efficient to run this type of heating over conventional central heating, and the average home could increase efficiency of the whole system by between 10-25% - this can rise to around 60% more efficient in offices with high ceilings.

Think of the money and energy you could be saving - plus being warmer in your own home or office!

The main reason for the savings is because radiators heat the room by convection; that is all their hot air is forced out of the radiator and then it rises up the wall towards the ceiling.  It only descends into the room after it has cooled slightly - and then heats your head while keeping your feet cold!

Added to this, it is standard practice to place radiators underneath windows to counter the draughts - but inevitably helps you lose heat out of the windows before it even hits your ceiling in the first place!

Also, the pipes leading to the radiators are usually running along your walls are boiling hot - losing heat as they go (well, if the pipes feel hot, then they are releasing that heat before they get to the radiators)!  Finally, your radiators need the temperature of the water inside to be around 60-70 degrees to be effective - a temperature that can only be reached by burning gas and fossil fuels.

The exact opposite is true of underfloor heating.  Firstly, the heat rises slowly out of the floor creating an ambient temperature and no draughts.  It doesn’t move warm and cold air around the room, taking dust and allergens with it - it just creates a warm room and warm toes!

Secondly, all the pipes are under your floor so are only ‘losing heat’ up into your home - which is just where you want it.  And, there is no risk of children or the elderly scalding themselves on the pipes or radiators - all the heat is safely underground.

And thirdly, underfloor heating can run at a much lower temperature, therefore can be powered by energy sources such as solar and both air and ground source heat pumps instead of burning coal, oil or gas.

Further Benefits:
There are other benefits to this form of heating other than just more efficient heating and money saving running costs, and they include:

Reduced Allergies - With no convection currents circulating around your home, you will have less trouble with floating allergens and dust.
Better Design - With no bulky, hot radiators around your walls and hallways, you can change the layout of your home to suit you - not to simply ‘fit’ in.
Reduced Maintenance - With no fiddly radiators and pipes to clean, dust or paint, you can keep your home clean and tidy - or even repaint it - without having to spend extra time, energy and resources working around these space-wasters!
Less Stress On Your Boiler - Running at lower temperatures will be better for the life-span of your boiler.

So, don’t put ‘new slippers’ on your shopping list for gifts - put ‘underfloor heating’ instead!

Finding Your Next Energy Efficient Appliance……

Posted by Catherine - Under: Eco Basics, Eco Friendly House, Environment, General, Reduce, Shopping

Finding Energy Efficient Appliances Should Be Easy…

It is now easier than ever to find yourself and energy-efficient electrical appliance without compromising on quality or service.

Basically, manufacturers these days are trying to improve the energy efficiency of their electrical items to win your purchase. In Europe there is now the ‘Energy Rating Scheme’ (EU energy ratings from A (most energy efficient) through to G (least energy efficient)and that this is displayed on their and their competitors appliances. And in the US there is the Energy Star rating system doing the same thing.

Needless to say, many manufacturers want you to buy their products - and so they need to make sure that theirs matches up or betters the competition!! All good for the environment and the consumers pocket.

How To Get It Right:
Below are 4 simple steps to make sure that you are getting the best in terms of energy efficiency in your new appliances. They include just the basics - as obviously there are performance and branding issues that are specific to each household - as well as different budgets.

You also need to be aware that more energy efficient models are not necessarily better at washing your clothes or not breaking down all the time! The energy rating schemes only cover energy requirements - not the machines themselves - so you still need to research the products before purchase and read reviews or speak to the sales person in your store or on-line.

1) Research your products in advance.
Make sure that you have decided exactly what you need out of the appliance, for simplicities sake - a toaster that does 4 slices at a time or a dishwasher to fit in a small space in you kitchen, etc.

Once you have narrowed down your options, take a look at customer reviews to check usability and to line it up with your budget. Don’t forget that the price you pay will not always reflect what you get for your money and buying the cheaper model may cost you more in repairs than the slightly more expensive version that has a longer working life.

2) Look for the Energy Saving Logo/the Energy Star.
By checking which of your short-list have been labelled as more energy-efficient can help you make the right choice in terms of reduced running costs for yourself.

Buying a lower rated item in the EU (D-G) may well mean you end up using more electricity per wash - theoretically making the machine/appliance ‘cost more’ over the year:

Cost of Item + cost to run per year + cost of any repairs = actual cost of item to you.

Energy Ratings are now available on many appliances including TV’s, set top boxes, heating equipment and fridges - plus many more. Some items have more than 1 ’score’ in the EU so make sure you check each one.

3) Ask In Store.
As more and more consumers are wanting to know about ways to reduce their energy costs - retailers are better informed of their options. Staff take training in this area to make sure that they are advising you on the best product for your requirements.

They should be able to explain how the energy rating systems work in your country and for every appliance you are interested in. They should also know how to find out and compare details on all their models - for example showing which perform best on standby and whether certain items come with energy saving features like automatic ’sleep mode’. Up to 8% of UK TV energy is wasted while on standby!

If you have done your research before you arrive in the store, then you won’t be overwhelmed by the choices available when you get to the shelves - try not to be swayed by appearance if you are serious about energy saving. Wanting that pink version that is D-rated is only a passing phase!!!!

4) Consider Doubling up!
Integrated appliances are the way forward with energy-saving. For example buying a TV with built in digital receiver - only buying 1 product rather than 2. Fridge-freezers and washer-Driers do the same.

  • Less raw materials to create - it’s all in one casing
  • Less packaging - only one item instead of 2 or more
  • Less transport - only 1 item to get to the store/your home
  • Less products in total - less plugs and cabling needed
  • Less electricity when on standby - only one power source

You may already have the second appliance - but when it is no longer required or breaks down - you then don’t need to replace it!

I hope that these few steps have been useful, and there will be more about appliances coming soon to help you make the better choices for the environment!

PS - cut down on games console usage if you can - they use loads of energy to run! A well used console can add around £160 EXTRA onto your electricity bill!!!

Want to Save Paper, Ink & Money at Home or the Office?

Posted by Catherine - Under: Eco Basics, Eco Friendly Business, Eco Friendly House, Environment, General, Reduce, Technology

An Easy Way To Stop Wasting Money At Home…..

I have always been the person nagging others at home or in the office to check what they print before they print it.  The number of times they churn off 3 or 4 pages of just a tiny line or a few words rather than having taken the time to check their ‘print preview’ before taking action.

Even an information sheet a friend got from her local hospital one time had just 2 lines of information on the second sheet!  It was headed and footered (if that’s a word) with all the important pre-printed Hospital details as well!  What a complete waste of money from our health services!  Why on earth someone couldn’t have checked this before printing off a batch I don’t know.

They many only have needed to delete a few non-important words from the introduction or joined one short papragraph onto the end of a neighboring short paragraph and the paper, money and energy saved would no doubt be amazing!  What if every hospital didn’t do this for all their every-day information sheets?  Its no wonder there is always a waiting list at the hospitals here - they are wasting goodness knows how much on headed paper and the staples holding empty sheets of paper together!!!

Anyway, no matter how hard I tried when printing spreadsheets and documents, I still had great trouble with the Internet.  How many times the information went off the sheet at the non-existent right margin!  The number of sheets of paper printing off just the website address and page 12 of 13 on them was unstoppable!  I needed help.

Sure enough, after some searching, I found a free piece of software that could help me out here!  This fantastic ‘i can’t believe someone hasn’t thought of it sooner’ software is sure to amaze you and also save you a fortune - and the planet!!!

Does It Really Make A Difference?
When I first visited the site earlier this year, I noticed that they had a count-up facility, that monitored how their software was saving printed pages of waste and how much that was in terms of carbon emissions.  It said then that they had saved around 4.5 million pieces of paper (thats just under 500 trees by their calculations) and just over 3 million lbs of C02 saved in energy and inks printing the useless things!

Since then (about 8 weeks), their calculators are showing that they have saved another 100 trees, and stopped a further 500,000 lbs of C02 being spat out from factories to print our blank pages!

Obviously this calculation is only based on the people that have downloaded the software, but maybe something like this should become standard for businesses, like hospitals, so that waste is severely reduced.  The example of the information above is frightening that with just a few minutes of better preparation the costs of printing could be halved - and staples would stay in their boxes!

Of course, you can save printed waste without this software by using ‘page preview’ every-time and cutting and pasting information from websites onto your preferred written software (reducing the font size and editing the information down to save ink and pages), but this is free and easy to use.

What Does It Do?
It helps you to highlight and remove unwanted pages that are going to print from the pages you have selected allowing you control over what it prints and what it deletes.  It also allows you to create PDF’s with one click to avoid the mess that usually prints from a web-page.

Their GreenPrint World Edition always self-deletes the wasted pages at the end of most article itself.  You know - the ones with just the URL, banner ads and legal disclaimer on them that you no doubt have to then shred or recycle having served no purpose at all - except increases your overheads!

For fun (or serious if it’s your own business), it also allows you to keep a track of what you have printed since installing the software and how much paper you have saved!

It’s not like you will be missing anything important - just saving time, money and resources.

Green Print software is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista (32 bit only). And it’s free to anyone.

They are aiming to save over 100 million trees and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 300 million tonnes (and while I have been writing this they have saved another tree!!!).  They also offer great deals on recycled office supplies!

Homes For Good Show - April 2009

Posted by Catherine - Under: Eco Basics, Eco Friendly Garden, Eco Friendly House, Environment, Food, Shows & Events, Site News, Spring, Technology

Have you ever wanted to know more about sustainable living, and get advice on converting your house and garden into more energy efficient and chemical-free environments? Well here is your chance.

The Homes For Good show in April this year, is all about offering advice and suggestions for every householder, offering new products and new approaches to old concepts that will make your life more ‘green’.

Why Change?
The choices we make can have a profound effect on the toxins in our home, the environmental impact of our house and garden and the effect on our local community.

Whether you are building a new house, garage, barn or other outbuilding from scratch - or redecorating or modernising an existing room or premises - you can make better choices. However, rather than researching everything from scratch you could always ask the experts, people who have been working in the industry for years.

You will also have the opportunity to talk to others like yourself, who are new to many eco-friendly concepts. We are all here for the same thing, so make sure you are prepared to talk to exhibitors and other visitors to get some answers regarding your concerns or interests.

What’s There?
There will be over 100 exhibitors including Eco Trust (sustainability), Neate (wind turbines), Green Stuff (IT solutions) and many many more covering solar, water, electricity, house-building, architects, conservation of old, lime suppliers and many for the eco garden.

There will also be free demonstrations where you can get your hands on some new and revolutionary technology. There will also be talks from experts and trade workers as well as books for research and products to buy.

All this for only £5 entry fee (£2 for students and senior citizens) and it’s free to anyone under 16 as well!

Check online at www.homesforgood.info for more information and directions.
